It has become a common occurrence for us. We ride the bus
into “the big city.”
New York City!
Honestly, I can’t say the rides are the joy of my life!
Over two hours and that’s just one way
But, I can say that I am with the joy of my life — my
wife — and we do it *because we have to.* Health issues
make it necessary.
However…
I HAVE NOTICED SOMETHING DURING OUR TRIPS
There are *plenty* of people making trips to NYC. And they
make the trip *every week day.*
Yes, every weekday!
Many commute for an hour or two each way to work. They
are “takin’ care of business.”
Making a living.
Supporting families. Showing up.
Consistently.
Day after day.
I ADMIRE THEM!
It’s true. I do admire them. My wife and I have often
commented on the amount of effort they expend in order to
maintain their jobs.
Every day.
It takes a certain high level of commitment to keep up that
pace. It has to be rough!
I GOT TO THINKING…
As I thought about the people we have seen, I made a few
very simple observations. Three to be exact.
One: They show up! Two: They are tired! Three: They laugh!
And then I thought: “Those simple points remind me of what
successful people do!”
THEY SHOW UP!
One of the first principles of success is — “you gotta show
up!” You start, pay the price of the daily grind, return to
“takin’ care of business”…
Or whatever you want to call it!
The point is that *you are there* to do what needs to be
done.
And you do it over and over again…
EVEN IF YOU ARE TIRED!
In other words, you pay the price of time and effort *even
when you don’t feel like it.*
I have seen it many times over in the lives of successful
people: they discipline themselves to do what needs to be
done even when they are physically or emotionally spent.
This is especially true when it comes to accomplishing the
important tasks of their lives.
Their dreams.
Their goals.
Their passionate desires.
BUT THEY ALSO LAUGH!
Back to the “bus example.” Two nights ago we were returning
late from NYC — around nine in the evening. I came down
the escalator and noticed a woman standing in line.
One of the “regulars” we have seen before. There she was…
Riding the bus — one more time. And tired — probably “one more time!”
But laughing! She stood in line joking around with us.
Her laughter reminded me of something else about successful
people: they maintain their sense of humor. Humor seems to
be their own “keep-life-in-perspective-tool.” A tool they
*often* use!
After they’ve showed up. Even if they are “spent.”
BY WAY OF REVIEW…
If we want to model successful people, we will:
1. Show up! Consistently “be there” to make it happen.
2. Expect and work through the rough times. Rough times are a part of the turf we all play on at some point in our lives.
3. Develop and maintain a good sense of humor.
THAT’S IT!
Yours for a day filled with beautiful moments in time,
Lee

SUCCESS
Lee Wise 2002
“Being there” one more time. Paying the price of time and effort to:
Do what needs to be done When it needs to be done In the way it needs to be done
Just one more time. Until…
You reach your goal, realize your dream, accomplish your mission, or simply realize you have “done enough.”
